Homicide detectives will trawl through CCTV footage to work out why a man's body was found in the middle of a residential street in Melbourne.
A bloody trail extending through parkland and over a bridge led to the man's final resting place in Caravel Lane in Caroline Springs on Sunday night.
Police believe the man, found by residents around 10pm, is a 36-year-old local.
"The man has apparently suffered a stab wound to his upper body and he was dead as they found him," Detective Senior Sergeant Stephen McIntyre said on Monday.
"We've conducted inquiries in the area and no one's been able to give us any explanation as to how that man has gotten to the location we found him."
The blood trail started on The Esplanade before the man ran or was chased over a nearby bridge onto Caravel Lane.
Police have asked anyone CCTV of the area to provide it for examination.
