Motorist ‘let boy on lap steer while drink-driving’

A man has been charged with multiple driving offences and resisting arrest after allegedly being caught allowing a child on his lap to steer in busy traffic.

The driver of a black Volkswagen Golf on Bourke Street in Waterloo, Sydney, was arrested at around 4pm yesterday afternoon.

Police allege a 10-year-old boy was holding the steering wheel and there was an eight-year-old girl was seated in the back.

9NEWS understands the man had picked up the two children after school.

The officer attempted to pull the car over, and the driver, a 45-year-old man, allegedly failed to stop but continued, before being caught in traffic.

After the officer approached the driver, he and the two children got out of the car.

9NEWS footage shows a man held on the ground by police while children are comforted nearby.

Police allege further officers were called in to help after the man resisted arrest.

He was taken to Redfern Police Station where police allege he returned a breath analysis reading of 0.248.

He was charged with drive manner dangerous to the public, high-range drink-driving, and resist arrest.

The man will appear at Downing Centre Local Court on Monday, October 16.
