He was "rendered unconscious" before his car - a black 2013 Honda CRV with registration ZRK-896 - was stolen, police said.

Witnesses also saw another car being driven from the scene by one of the offenders.

The man was taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital in a critical condition and remains on life support.

The victim’s wife was left scared and shaken by the attack, admitting to 9NEWS the couple recently had their first child.

“I don’t know what my future will look like,” she told 9NEWS.

“I’m a new mum, but if I lost my husband I have no idea what that means (for) me.”

Police have appealed for any further witnesses to come forward.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
