He died on the way to hospital.

The country footballer recently returned to the field after some time away from the game.

9News understands he had been at a football function before walking to a mate's house for drinks.

A Toyota Hilux believed to have been involved in the crash has been recovered.

Detectives believe Purcell may have been side-swiped by a teammate who did not realise he had just killed his friend.

A 20-year-old Alexandra man, who handed himself in to police soon after the hit, has been released and is now being treated as a witness.

A 23-year-old Fawcett man questioned over the incident has been released pending further investigation.

The driver of the Hilux may not have known they had killed the young man. 9News
