Brother of man shot over Melbourne burglary remanded

The brother of a man fatally shot by police after a wild car chase through Melbourne's west has been remanded in custody over fears his life was "out of control".

Kuela Ahokava, 23, died when a 40-minute long police chase culminated with an officer being pinned by a van to a brick wall at a Tullamarine factory and the sergeant fired his gun.

His brother, Penisimani Ahokava, 22, appeared in Melbourne Magistrates Court yesterday charged with trespassing and car theft over Friday's event.

Ahokava comes from a family of nine and his parents are flying to Melbourne from Tonga for his brother's funeral.

His eldest brother William Ahokava, a leader in the Deer Park Mormon church community, had offered to house, supervise, employ and support Ahokava.

However, Magistrate Ross Betts said the charges against the younger Ahokava were too serious and in his opinion "his life is out of control from drugs".

Ahokava is charged with trespassing, car theft, driving offences and a receiving stolen goods charge.

Ahokava's co-accused, Joshua Iviiti, 18, was also due in court yesterday but asked not to appear in person.

He has been charged with 18 offences, including burglary, vehicle theft, and dangerous driving while pursued by police.

Ahokava and Iviiti will next appear in the Sunshine Magistrates Court.
