A man has been arrested by police after a five hour stand-off with police sparked when he barricaded himself inside a building in Adelaide's west.

Emergency were called to the Marion Motel and Apartments complex in Plympton Park at 2.30am to reports a man had locked himself inside, smashing windows and making threats.

The man, who was sitting on the roof of the building, has now been arrested, after hours of aggressive behaviour, including throwing objects at police from the building.

Authorities had closed the streets around the motel, diverting traffic from the area, but they have now been reopened.

Residents staying at the motel were evacuated.

Police said the man was unarmed, but was believed to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
