Bondi Beach king hit victim released from hospital as man charged over attack

A man has been charged over yesterday's alleged one-punch attack at Bondi Beach that left a 21-year-old man in a coma.

Jake Stephenson had watched the A-League game between Sydney FC and Melbourne City at Allianz Stadium on Saturday night before he went to Bondi, News Corp reports.

He standing on the footpath on Campbell Parade, near Roscoe Street, just after 12.30am when he and a 32-year-old man were allegedly involved in an argument.

Mr Stephenson, from Nowra, ran off after the incident but he was allegedly followed along Campbell Parade and punched in the back of the head.

He fell to the ground, his head colliding with the cement causing critical injuries.

Police allege his attacker then ran at him and kicked him in the chest.

A number of witnesses came to the victim's aid while the 32-year-old man allegedly ran off along Campbell Parade.

The injured man was treated by paramedics at the scene for serious head injuries and taken to St Vincent’s Hospital where he was put into an induced coma.

He was monitored overnight and after his condition improved he was brought out of the coma and later discharged from hospital.

The man suffered bruising to his brain, a large cut to his forehead, a black eye, a chipped tooth and cuts to his face and body and will require further medical treatment.

His alleged attacker presented himself to Waverly Police Station at about 12.45 yesterday with his lawyer and was interviewed by detectives.

Detectives searched the man's Hillside home, seizing clothing before charging him with recklessly causing grievous bodily harm.

He was granted strict conditional bail and will appear in Waverley Local Court on Wednesday November 19.

The incident occurred just metres from where Michael McEwen was brutally bashed in eerily similar circumstances last year.

His attacker, David Hona, was sentenced to nearly five years’ jail over the attack last week.

Mr McEwen’s father said he was disappointed these attacks keep happening.

"It leaves you angry and confused, considering there has been so much publicity surrounding this issue," Robert McEwen told 9NEWS.  

It was a night of violence for the coastal suburb with another man hit in the head with a brick and robbed by two men just one street away.

Two women were assaulted, and a drunken brawl also erupted at nearby Bondi Junction.

Police do not believe these incidents were related to the one-punch attack.

Supt Stiles said he doesn't believe lockout laws recently introduced in Sydney's CBD have led to violence spilling out to unaffected areas, such as Bondi.

"We’re always prepared for a busy summer in Bondi. Its always busy. No different from any other year."
