NSW man charged with allegedly hitting man with tomahawk during violent confrontation

A NSW man has suffered serious wounds to his back and shoulder after being allegedly hit with a tomahawk during a confrontation.

Police said the allegedly victim had armed himself with a plank of wood before arriving at a house in Rutherford, near Newcastle, about midnight.

The 31-year-old man confronted a 21-year-old occupant, who then allegedly pulled out a tomahawk and hit the man several times.

The victim suffered a serious wounds to his left shoulder and wounds to his back. He was taken to nearby Maitland Hospital for treatment.

It is understood he underwent surgery for his injuries.

The accused man is due to face Maitland court today charged with reckless wounding and affray.

The Newcastle Herald has reported the alleged victim could also face charges.
