Man's fingertip bitten off during brawl at wedding reception

Charges have been laid after a man had the tip of his finger bitten off in a brawl at a wedding reception in Sydney's south-west.

A 42-year-old man was allegedly trying to steal handbags off a table at a Campbelltown restaurant when he was confronted by a 47-year-old man just after 9.30pm yesterday.

"There was an altercation between the men and other patrons during which it is alleged the 47-year-old man had the tip of his finger bitten off," police said in a statement.

The restaurant's licensee Fred Holovinsky said the man accused of trying to steal the bags was not an invited guest. 

"We don't condone violence of any sort here," Mr Holovinsky said.

"We've got a very good reputation and when you get some fella who is not invited to a function causes problems for a happy occasion, it's very sad."

The wounded 47-year-old man was taken to Liverpool Hospital for treatment. He has since been released.

The 42-year-old man was arrested and charged with reckless grievous bodily harm on today.

He was refused bail and will appear at Campbelltown Local Court tomorrow.
