Man guilty of 2014 hit-and-run murder after pub fight in Sydney’s west

A man who hit another man with his car after a disagreement over a western Sydney pub pool game has been found guilty of murder.

Michael Allen Meakin, 47, had pleaded not guilty to murdering 30-year-old Nicholas McEvoy, in a hit and run at Dean Park in the early hours of February 21, 2014.

Meakin’s defence had earlier told the court it was an accident on a “drunken Maccas run” however the jury before Justice David Davies denied the claims at the NSW Supreme Court today.

Mr McEvoy's loved ones cried and said "thank you".

During the trial, the court was told both men were kicked out of the Plumpton Hotel on the night of February 20, after McEvoy started cheering on Meakin's pool opponent.

The court was told Meakin had been at the pub for almost 10 hours and had bought 21 schooners of full-strength beer, before being ejected with Mr McEvoy around midnight.

A passing motorist saw McEvoy's body on the side of Richmond Road at about 12:10am on February 21, however by the time paramedics arrived he had died.

Crown prosecutor Pat Barrett told the jury the men’s stoush at the Plumpton Hotel had a great “deal of significance” in Mr McEvoy’s death. The court heard Mr McEvoy issued a challenge to Meakin as he left the pub, saying he would "smash him".

Mr Barrett said after hitting Mr McEvoy, Meakin did not hand himself in until the next day, and had gone after him deliberately.

Defence barrister Grant Brady last week said there had been a "half-fight" outside when Meakin took a swing at Mr McEvoy, but that it had been "done and dusted in seconds".

Outside court, Barry McEvoy, described his brother as a "good man".

"He didn't deserve what happened to him," he said.

"We got the result we wanted so hopefully now we can move on as a family."

Mr Meakin will face sentencing proceedings in October.
