Man gets 18 months for hit-and-run death

More than three years after her husband was killed in a hit-and-run accident, Lorraine Reid says that the 18-month sentence for the driver "is what it is".

Father-of-two Daryl Reid, 48, was on his way to work when a stolen car driven by a 16-year-old crashed into his car at Narellan, southwest of Sydney, in October 2010.

The teen, who is now 20, was arrested at the 2013 inquest into Mr Reid's death after he handed up a signed confession to the coroner.

The man, who cannot be named, pleaded guilty to a number of charges including dangerous driving causing death and failing to stop.

At Campbelltown District Court on Thursday, Judge Jennifer English sentenced him to a maximum of 42 months and a minimum of 18.

Mr Reid's widow Lorraine told a sentence hearing last month that she blamed herself for her husband's death because she'd woken up that morning to scold him for singing too loudly to the cat before he went to work.

"I blame myself. If I hadn't got up ... he would not have been in that crash at that precise moment," she told Campbelltown District Court.

"That was the last time I saw (him) alive. The next time I saw him was in the mortuary."

She said she was haunted by nightmares of him dying alone on the side of the road.

"We should've been 80 years old holding each other's hand," she said in February.

Defence barrister Tom Quilter said the offender had abused drugs and was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder after the crash.

His earliest date of release is in January 2017.

"It will never be enough," Mrs Reid told reporters after the sentence was handed down.

"It can't bring (him) back, but it is what it is."
