Man injured in West Ryde unit explosion caused by 'cockroach bomb'

A man has suffered burns in an accidental explosion at a West Ryde unit, understood to have been caused by a cockroach bomb placed near a hot water tank.

A NSW Ambulance spokesman said paramedics were called to the scene on Adelaide Street about 8.30am after reports of an explosion.

The man, believed to be in his 30s, has sustained burns to at least six percent of his body.

The explosion blew out three windows of the ground floor unit.

The man has been taken to hospital.

A NSW Fire & Rescue spokeswoman said crews were called to the scene about 8.43am after receiving reports of structural damage, but have since left the scene.

At least one bus route, 524, was diverted as emergency services arrived at the scene.

The route, heading towards Parramatta, is now using Adelaide Street again between Victoria Road and Hay Street.

Cockroach bombs use aerosol propellant which is typically flammable, and normally carry warnings about using near any electrical appliances.
