A man has been charged following an inner-city brawl on the first weekend NSW's tough alcohol-related violence laws are in effect.

Police were called to the large brawl on Pitt Street at 5.40am on Saturday.

When police arrived the group had moved on but two men still at the scene were asked for identification.

Police allege one man, 26, began fighting with police.

Officers used capsicum spray on the man before he was arrested.

Two police officers were treated at the scene by paramedics for secondary contamination from the capsicum spray.

The 26-year-old man was later charged with resisting an officer in the execution of duty.

He was granted conditional bail to appear before Downing Centre Local Court on February 27.

The brawl comes a day after NSW parliament passed tough new sentencing laws for drunken assaults.

Under the laws, a fatal assault while under the influence of alcohol or drugs attracts a eight year mandatory minimum jail sentence.
