A man has fought off a crocodile while on a hunting trip in the Northern Territory.

Stephen Moreen, 20, told 9NEWS he wrestled with the animal in the water before he poked it in the eye and broke free of its jaws.

Mr Moreen said he was hunting geese last night in the remote community of Peppimenarti, which is around 320 kilometres south-west of Darwin, when his cousin shot down a number of birds.

He said he waded into the water to collect them when a crocodile grabbed him by the arm.

It dragged him underwater before spinning him around a number of times in a death roll.

While underwater Mr Moreen says he was able to poke the 2.5m crocodile in the eye, forcing the animal to let go.

He quickly ran for the bank where his family members were waiting.

Mr Moreen’s sister-in-law gave him first aid before taking him to the nearby Wudaduk Outstation where 9NEWS understands he self-medicated with a number Carlton Dry beers while waiting for an ambulance.

He spent the night at a local clinic and was able to drive himself to Royal Darwin Hospital late this morning where he has recieved treatment for puncture wounds to his right arm.
