Man fighting for life after car and truck collide in Melbourne's north

A man is fighting for his life and four others are injured after a car and truck collided in Melbourne's north.

The truck driver escaped injury in the smash which happened about 1.30am today.

A male passenger was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries, Victoria Police said in a statement.

Two other passengers, a man and a woman, were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

There are expected to be extensive traffic delays while investigators examine the crash scene.

Bell Street was closed, causing significant traffic hold-ups during the morning commute.

Albert Street is closed between Gower Street and Raglan Street.
