Melbourne man killed by intruder

An intruder has killed a man while other family members including children were inside a Melbourne home.

Police don't believe the attack was random and say the victim may have known his killer.

The man, aged in his 20s, was stabbed by a man who broke into his St Albans home in the early hours of this morning.

Family members drove the victim to Sunshine hospital where he died.

Inspector Chris Gilbert said the victim suffered multiple wounds.

"There's been a number of wounds, we're not exactly sure what they've been inflicted by," he told reporters.

Insp Gilbert said the intruder and victim may have known each other, though it was not believed to be a domestic.

He said five or six family members, including children, were home at the time but it's not known if they saw the attack.

"It's a terrible attack," he said.

"We don't believe this has been a random attack as such.

"This is generally a safe area and, you know, neighbours will be quite rightly concerned."
