A worker has died and another is seriously injured after a six-metre trench collapsed in Ballarat, Victoria.

Emergency services were called to the scene near the Glenelg Highway, Delacombe, after the trench collapsed about 11.15am.

One man, who is yet to be identified, died at the scene.

Excavators worked for more than two hours to free the surviving man, who was buried waist-deep in dirt.

He was sedated and flown to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with serious injuries to his lower body, Ambulance Victoria said in a statement.

He has since been placed in an induced coma.

Both men involved in the incident were employees of PipeCon, and were working on a housing developing site.

Worksafe and police remain on the scene as a probe begins into why the trench collapsed.

Fellow pipe layer Travis Bramble told 9NEWS the accident “makes him feel a bit sick”.

“It could’ve been one of our boys,” Mr Bramble said.
