A 25-year-old man has died after ramming a police car, after bludgeoning his partner's mother to death in Rockhampton.

He deliberately rammed the police car just an hour after murdering the 53-year-old woman, whose body was found at the home she shared with her daughter.

The 53-year-old suffered a "fair amount of trauma to her head and face region", Detective Senior Sergeant Luke Peachey said.

The man's partner was home at the time with their young child – a toddler – and found her mother's body.

"It's obviously a horrific scene," Dt. Sr Sgt Peachey said.

"The suspect was armed with a number of weapons including a machete and hammer."

A witness to the ramming told 9NEWS the fiery crash was shocking.

"[It's] pretty scary to watch that kind of stuff happening on your way to work," they said.

Police believe the motive for the murder was a domestic violence order recently taken out against the killer.

The police officer who was in this rammed vehicle only suffered minor injuries.
