An elderly man has died and his passenger seriously injured after a collision on the Sturt Highway at the town of Monash. (9NEWS) 

An elderly man has died after his car collided with a truck on a highway in the Riverland region of South Australia.

Emergency services were called to the Sturt Highway near the town of Monash around 11am after the car and truck collided.

The 72-year-old driver of the car died at the scene.

His passenger, a 70-year-old woman, suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to the Royal Adelaide Hospital.

The truck driver was not injured.

Authorities have closed the Sturt Highway at Monash as investigations continue.

Motorists are advised to seek an alternate route as traffic diversions are in place.
