A man has died in hospital after an alleged assault in a Victorian town last month.

Emergency services were called to a supermarket on McLennan Street in Mooroopna, in northern Victoria, at about 7.15pm on May 22.

A 46-year-old Mooroopna man was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

He died yesterday afternoon.

A 19-year-old Shepparton man had previously been charged with intentionally causing serious injury in circumstances of gross violence, intentionally cause serious injury, recklessly cause serious injury, assault, assault by kicking, traffick cannabis, possess cannabis, and deal with property suspected being proceeds of crime.

Homicide detectives are now leading the investigation into the incident and police said the charges would be reviewed.

The 19-year-old man remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in Shepparton Magistrate's Court on October 3.

Police believe the parties involved were known to each other.
