Melbourne bashing victim remembered as 'top bloke' as alleged assailant faces court

A man charged over a fatal assault outside a Melbourne McDonald's has appeared in court as friends and family of the Parkville student mourn the tragic loss of life.

Police charged ANZ investment banker Kyle Zandipour, 27, following the alleged attack on 21-year-old Joshua Hardy on St Kilda Road at 1am yesterday morning.

The University of Melbourne Arts student was allegedly thrown the ground and kicked in the head.

He died from his injuries an hour later in hospital.

Mr Zandipour fronted court this morning.

Lawyer George Defteros said Mr Zandipour approached the homicide squad yesterday and participated in a lengthy interview.

"He has given his version of events as to what transpired," Mr Defteros told the Melbourne Magistrates Court.

He was remanded in custody to appear in court again on October 24.

It comes as friends took to Hardy's Facebook page yesterday to post tributes to their fallen mate, calling him a "top bloke".

"[He was] an absolutely top bloke, true mate (and) one of the few people in this world that could bring a smile to all," Shaun Hutchinson wrote.

"Joshua Hardy, you will be truly missed by all as we say goodbye to a truly genuine, spirited and kind-hearted young man. R.I.P. bud," he said.

Another friend said Hardy was "one of the most bubbliest - people I had the pleasure of knowing".

Hardy was renowned for his football prowess and was "popular" and well-loved according to mourners.

Police said yesterday that the alleged attack appeared to be unprovoked.
