A young man who was stabbed to death on a Sydney street has been remembered as a friend who always made his mates laugh.

A witness heard arguing on Tramway St in Mascot last night before Alex Bargiatakis was found on the footpath with a stab wound to his torso.

Despite CPR attempts, Mr Bargiatakis, 20, died at the scene.

A 21-year-old man, arrested at the scene, has been charged with murder and is due to face Newtown Local Court today.

Friends paid tribute to Mr Bargiatakis, a former Kingsgrove High School student, as news of his death filtered through the community.

"Through thick and thin love ya brother," Steve Bruthaa posted on Facebook.

"Your (sic) with the angels now. We lost a brother today.

"A brother that made everyone laugh and cry, gone but never forgotten."

Tyler Hill wrote: "RIP my brother gone to soon" (sic).
