Police were called and found the 50-year-old with critical neck injuries.

The man was taken to John Hunter Hospital but later died.

Neighbours and friends had tried to help before paramedics arrived.

The attack happened outside the house in front of family and friends who were gathered on Boxing Day.

Detective Chief Inspector Scott Parker said it was "a complete tragedy for a family having a social gathering at Christmas time".
