A man is dead after a car and truck collided on a highway northeast of Melbourne.

The 69-year-old man was driving a Ford Fairmont sedan west-bound on the Melba Highway, near Healesville-Kinglake Road, late on Tuesday when it appeared he lost control.

"Police have been told the sedan collided with a prime mover truck travelling in the opposite direction," a Victoria Police spokesperson said.

"The driver of the car, a Mooroolbark man, died at the scene while the truck driver, a 36-year-old NSW man, escaped injury."

The crash happened at Dixons Creek about 7.20pm AEST on Tuesday, and police are calling for any witnesses to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Victoria's road toll stands at 75 compared with 67 at the same time in 2013.
