Man charged with assaulting news cameraman outside Melbourne synagogue

A man has been charged with allegedly assaulting a news cameraman outside a Melbourne synagogue where a large group of people gathered in breach of lockdown restrictions.

Victoria Police today confirmed a further four fines had been issued to people for illegally gathering at a Ripponlea synagogue to mark Jewish New Year.

The group refused to leave the synagogue until nightfall on Tuesday, prompting a 14-hour standoff with police.

Police said the 45-year-old cameraman covering the news event was allegedly assaulted by a 72-year-old man from St Kilda about 7pm.

The cameraman was hospitalised with a concussion, but he has since been released.

Police in a statement to 9News said the St Kilda man had been arrested and charged with recklessly causing injury and unlawful assault.

The 72-year-old was also slapped with a $5452 fine for breaching the Chief Health Officer's directions.

He is due to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on February 21 next year.

Police have now handed out a total of 11 fines worth $5452 to the group that breached lockdown rules.

"Victoria Police will continue to investigate the incident and will issue infringement notices to all adults who attended the illegal gathering," a police statement read.
