A second man has been charged over the murder of a Melbourne good Samaritan.

Police charged a 31-year-old man over the May 2009 death of Luke Mitchell after he surrendered to Australian authorities in Bangkok on Thursday following Australia's extradition request.

The man, a Thai citizen, has been charged with one count of murder and will appear at the Melbourne Magistrates Court later on Friday.

Thatiya Terdputham, a dual Thai-Australian citizen, appeared in court in September charged with murder after being extradited from Thailand.

Mr Mitchell, a chef, died after being bashed and stabbed as he attempted to help a man being assaulted outside a nightclub in Melbourne's north.

Terdputham and another man allegedly fled Australia after Mr Mitchell's death.
