Man behind bars after Redfern stabbing

A man charged over a fatal stabbing at a notorious inner-Sydney housing commission unit block will remain behind bars.

Lloyd Edward Haines has been charged with murder, attempted murder and aggravated break and enter, after police were called to the McKell housing commission block in Redfern on Sunday night where they found a seriously wounded 42-year-old man in the courtyard.

Inside the complex in a blood-splattered unit they found another man, 48, who had already died from his wounds.

Mr Haines, 29, did not apply for bail when his matter was mentioned at Parramatta Local Court on Wednesday.

Bail was formally refused.

It comes after the 42-year-old victim, who is in hospital in a stable condition, told police that the attack had been carried out by three people in their 30s and 40s.

Neighbours reported hearing screams and yelling.

Mr Haines was arrested on Tuesday but police are still searching for a man and a woman.

The man is described as being of Asian appearance, in his 30s, about 180cm tall, and was wearing a red and blue chequered shirt at the time of the stabbing.

The woman is described as being of Caucasian appearance, with a thin build and brown hair.

Investigators would also like to speak to anyone who has information about a red 1998 model Toyota sedan with NSW registration plates VFP-141 as officers believe it may be linked to the murder.

Superintendent Luke Freudenstein said that the attack, while not pre-meditated, wasn't random either.

"I want to let the community know that Redfern is a safe place and murders such as these are few and far between," he said.

Mr Haines is due to reappear at Central Local Court on October 9.
