Man charged over Qld cop station break-in

It was inevitable, but a man has been charged after allegedly breaking into a north Queensland police station.

Officers on patrol in Atherton returned to their station on Monday night to find a man had smashed a glass door and broken in.

The 23-year-old was arrested and taken to hospital for assessment.

He was on Saturday charged with possession of a knife in public, seriously assaulting police and two counts of wilfully damaging police property.

He will appear in Cairns Magistrates Court on Saturday.

The station was unoccupied and no property was stolen.

Police have not specified a motive for the unusual break-in.
