Man charged after Melbourne cop shootout

A man will appear in a Melbourne court after ramraids on supermarkets ended in a police shootout.

The Cobram man, 27, will appear in Melbourne Magistrates Court on Friday charged with two counts of burglary, theft of a motor vehicle, possess cartridge ammunition and with possessing a commercial quantity of a drug of dependence, namely 1-4 Butanol.

An ATM was stolen from a supermarket, another store was broken into and a police van was rammed before the shooting early yesterday.

Police were first called to a Sunbury supermarket just before 3.50am, after someone saw a dark-coloured Nissan Navara ute towing an ATM away from the store.

Less than an hour later, police went to an IGA at Westmeadows where a truck, trailer and bobcat were found inside.

About 4.40am, a Victoria Police divisional van was rammed at Greenvale, with police believing the dark-coloured ute was involved in the attack before being driven away.

Two Australian Federal Police officers came to help their Victorian counterparts, having heard about the ramming on the police radio.

Soon after the AFP duo approached a suspicious vehicle in Greenvale and were fired at, with one officer returning fire and hitting one of the men inside.

Two were arrested and a gun was seized.

The injured man was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries where he remains under police guard.
