Man charged after cop dragged 200m by car

A man has been charged after a police officer was dragged 200 metres along a road by a car in Townsville.

Police will allege the man grabbed the officer's arm after the policeman leant into the car to breath test him about 2.40am on Saturday.

He then drove about 200 metres before the 45-year-old constable was able to free himself.

The officer was allegedly elbowed twice in the face before he fell onto the road.

The officer suffered a large cut to his head and eye, a chipped tooth and abrasions and bruising to his body.

He was treated in Townsville Hospital but has since been released.

Police will also allege the driver failed to stop for officers just before it crashed.

A 23-year-old Townsville man has been charged with 11 offences, including three counts of the dangerous operation of a vehicle and three counts of assaulting police.

He is due to appear in Townsville Magistrates Court on Monday.
