A 26-year-old man has appeared in a Canberra court for the alleged murder of another man in the capital.

Jayscen Anthony Newby fronted the ACT Magistrate's Court on Monday charged over the stabbing death.

Newby did not enter a plea or apply for bail and his victim's name was suppressed by the court.

He will remain in custody before facing court again in March.

Newby handed himself in to ACT police on Saturday night after the alleged murder in the northern Canberra suburb of Charnwood.

Police had responded to a disturbance at a residence at about 1:30am on Saturday where they found a 27-year-old man with stab wounds.

The victim was taken by ambulance to hospital but died a short time later.
