A Melbourne man is facing possible charges after he was allegedly caught going 85km/hr over the speed limit in an electric car in Victoria's north-east.

The 32-year-old, from Oakleigh, was travelling around Tawong on his birthday yesterday when police allegedly detected his Tesla driving at 185km/hr in a 100km/hr zone, on Murray River Road at about 2pm.

The car also allegedly had two unroadworthy tyres.

Police said that rather than enjoying a birthday trip to the snow, the man was instead interviewed for speed and defect-related offences.

He will be served a notice to surrender his Tesla and is expected to be charged on summons.
