Man allegedly caught drinking at the wheel in Melbourne

A man in his 20s was busted allegedly having a tipple behind the wheel in Melbourne yesterday.

Police were patrolling Mitcham in the city's east when a Toyota Yaris drove past them on Whitehorse Road at about 12pm.

Officers allegedly saw the 24-year-old driver with one hand on the wheel while the other tipped back a bottle of wine.

The Ashburton man was pulled over on Cochrane Street nearby.

Police say his breath test returned a result of .234, more than four times the legal limit.

The Yaris was impounded and the man's licence suspended.

The man is now set to face drink driving charges in court.
