Man battles 175km/h winds on US mountaintop

A man in the US has found himself battling some extremely strong winds at the top of a mountain in New Hampshire.

Weather observer and IT specialist for the Mount Washington Observatory, Mike Dorfman, was at the summit of Mount Washington, the highest peak in the northeast, when he found himself facing wind speeds of up to 175km/h.

In a video shared online by Mr Dorfman, he can be seen trying, not entirely successfully, to walk against the wind.

At one stage he is lifted off the snow-capped ground into the air and held there by the strong winds.

After being pushed back several metres and knocked off his feet twice, the worker eventually manages walk to several metres against the gale.

“Wind on the summit is an experience that you can’t just describe to understand,” Mr Dorfman wrote in a blog post.

“It makes you fully appreciate that air is in fact a fluid and not empty space. It is really impossible to safely face down hundred-mile-per-hour winds almost anywhere else.

“You’d either be risking your life trying to hike into them (I was exhausted after several minutes of playing in the wind)

“I am very thankful for my experience here on the summit!”
