Man bashed after song tiff with Fiji PM

A music composer who complained to Fijian Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama about the wrongful use of his songs has been bashed, Amnesty International claims.

The human rights organisation alleges four army officers assaulted the 60-year-old teacher near his home outside Suva on September 27.

Amnesty says the man had exchanged angry text messages with Mr Bainimarama earlier on the same day about the unauthorised use of his music during the recent election campaign.

He remains in hospital recovering from injuries.

Amnesty International spokeswoman Kate Schuetze called for an independent inquiry into the incident.

"The investigation should cover not only the physical perpetrators, but those, if any, who gave the orders to attack the man," she said.

Mr Bainimarama was sworn in as prime minister following Fiji's first democratic election since he seized power in a military coup in 2006.
