Man arrested over New Year's Day death

Police have arrested a man and expect to charge him with murder following the fatal stabbing of a man on NSW's mid north coast on New Year's Day.

Police said a 33-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday in Toormina following the death of a 44-year-old man at a Port Macquarie address.

NSW Ambulance paramedics attempted to resuscitate the man when called at about 6am (AEDT) on January 1 but he died at the scene.

Police said the arrested man was assisting them with their inquiries and it was expected he would be charged with murder.
