Man arrested on Queensland highway after allegedly abducting woman

A man has been charged after leading police on a car chase down the Bruce Highway on the Sunshine Coast, after allegedly holding a woman against her will.

9News captured the chaos on the highway after 21-year-old Anthony Sebastian Oliver was arrested.

Oliver allegedly forced a woman to get inside a Mazda 3 in Nambour about 6.30pm yesterday, driving at speed along the Nambour Connection Road.

Sunshine Coast police tracked the vehicle and deployed tyre spikes to disable it.

After the car stopped, Oliver allegedly sprinted towards a nearby Toyota RAV4 going in the other direction, dragged the 64-year-old driver out and punched him in the head.

The quick-thinking passenger in the Toyota switched off the engine.

With nowhere to go, Oliver was quickly taken into police custody.

Detective acting Senior Sergeant Tim Harris praised the passenger's decisive action.

"To have the mindset to carry out that action in the heat of that incident, I take my hat off to them, full credit," he said.

Other drivers were also caught in the road spikes that police deployed.

"I heard like a clunk, like going over a manhole, and then my car started to pull to one side," one woman who was caught in the chaos said.

"Everyone was pulling over in front of me and then I realised, yeah, my tyres were spiked."

Oliver faced Maroochydore Magistrates Court today.

Police initially charged him with one count of depriving liberty, robbery and dangerously operating of a motor vehicle.

A further 31 charges were added during the hearing.

Outside the court, Oliver's lawyer made no comment.

Oliver made no application for bail, and remained in custody tonight.

He will face court again in November.
