A man has been charged after allegedly punching a police officer in the face on the NSW north coast.

A Police Dog Unit was patrolling the Coffs Harbour CBD just after 9.30pm last night when a member of the public flagged them down and alerted them to a man nearby.

Police tracked down the alleged offender and followed him into Studio Lane before returning to the vehicle to release the police dog.

The man then allegedly punched the officer in the face, before the pair struggled with each other and the alleged offender fled the scene.

The injured officer involved was taken to Coffs Harbour Health Campus for treatment for facial injuries and has now been released.

Police later found the 36-year-old man on Nimbin Place before he was arrested and taken to Coffs Harbour Police Station where he was questioned by police.

This morning he was charged with assault police officer in execution of duty causing actual bodily harm, and resist officer in execution of duty.

He has been refused bail and will appear at Coffs Harbour Local Court later today.
