Man arrested at Bishop ANU protest

A student has been arrested by police at a university campus in Canberra where protesters were trying to disrupt a speech by Foreign Minister Julie Bishop.

ACT Policing said the man had been charged with property damage to a glass window outside a hall at the Australian National University on Monday evening, where Ms Bishop was speaking at a conference on foreign policy.

A group of about 30 protesters tried to drown out her address by chanting, whistling and shouting against the federal government's planned university changes.

One of them also tried to ride a motorcycle up to the hall.

Ms Bishop remained unfazed throughout the 30-minute delivery, opening her address by acknowledging her antagonists: "Good evening, ladies, gentlemen, oh, and students," she said.

The incident marks the third time she has been targeted by protesters in a matter of weeks.

A man angry about job losses and university fees was arrested after lunging at her car as she left a C20 summit in Melbourne on June 20.

Ms Bishop was also heckled by about 20 students and then jostled and shoved before having to be ushered by security from Sydney University in May.
