A man has been charged after an elderly couple were allegedly assaulted and carjacked in Sydney after they agreed to give a stranger a lift.

A 53-year-old Bankstown man, who has been known to police, was arrested in Wyong this morning.

He has since been charged with larceny, unlawfully take/drive motor vehicle with person in it, take/detain person with intent to obtain advantage and aggravated robbery.

Detective Inspector Timothy Liddiard announced the man had been arrested. Nine

Detective Inspector Timothy Liddiard has said police were able to track the man down because members of the public responded to a CCTV image of the man released by police.

"I'd just like to thank the public for their assistance in identifying this man," the detective said.

"It was an extremely concerning incident."

It occurred about 12pm on December 13 after a man offered a 81-year-old woman and 90-year-old man help carrying their grocery shopping to their car in Casula.

The man then allegedly asked for a lift, to which they agreed.

While driving, the woman allegedly noticed the man steal her phone from her handbag and pulled over and asked him to get out.

After leaving the gold Nissan Micra, he allegedly assaulted the woman and drove off with the 90-year-old passenger still in his seat before pushing him out in the nearby suburb, Liverpool.

The 90-year-old was treated by paramedics for facial injuries.
