A man and a woman have been charged with attacking a vision-impaired homeless man on a street in Sydney's west.

Police allege a woman, 38, and a man, 39, hit the victim with a blunt object after he confronted them as they tried to break into a boarded up house in Hebersham on Saturday morning.

The 45-year-old man was found semi-conscious by neighbours lying on the street and remains in Nepean Hospital in an induced coma, NSW Police said.

"I think it’s absolutely atrocious," neighbour Tony Lockwood told 9NEWS.

"It’s disgusting…I’m very shocked," local woman Marie Minshell said.

The alleged attackers have both been charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm.

They have been refused bail and are due to appear at Mt Druitt Local Court this afternoon.
