Man accused of Anzac Day sailor assault pleads not guilty

A Sydney man accused of punching a Navy sailor in full ceremonial uniform on a train on Anzac Day has pleaded not guilty to assault.

Guy Ross Abbott, 27, denied breaking seaman Corey Evans’ nose in a brief hearing at Campbelltown Local Court today.

He did plead guilty to a charge of drinking in public.

Mr Evans, 24, is at sea but was represented by his mother Rachael Evans and partner Emma Novotny.

"I’m very angry, disappointed. I hope (justice will be served). I’m not confident but I hope so," Ms Novotny told The Daily Telegraph.

"(It was) very horrific, it wasn’t something you want to witness or see your partner go through."

Mr Evans was in uniform and returning from the Anzac Day Memorial Service when he reportedly approached a group of young men drinking and harassing commuters.

Ms Novotny said the group was "openly drinking, swearing, and disrespecting Anzac Day in front of veterans and families with young children".

The serviceman was allegedly punched in the face and suffered a bloody nose as he got off the train at Glenfield a short time later.

His attacker fled the scene.

The matter will return to court on June 27.
