Mali attack shows extent of threat: Bishop

The siege at a luxury hotel in Mali that left 19 people dead underscores the extent of the threat of terrorism across the globe, Foreign Minister Julie Bishop says.

Ms Bishop on Sunday expressed her condolences to the families of those killed in Bamako, although there are no reports any Australians were involved.

"While an Al-Qaeda affiliate has claimed responsibility, it does underscore the fact we are dealing with a significant regional and global terror threat that can come in a number of forms and through a number of organisations," she said, adding that Australia will continue its support to defeat Daesh.
