Malcom Turnbull reportedly banned from Sydney’s Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has reportedly been banned from participating in next year’s Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras parade in protest of his failed plebiscite on same-sex marriage.

In March, Mr Turnbull become the first prime minister to attended the event on Oxford Street, Surry Hills.

Following an activist takeover of the Mardi Gras organisation over claims of misappropriation, the new governing body led by James Brechney – responsible for the movement that painted the rainbow crossing on Oxford Street – approved a motion banning the prime minister from taking part in the ceremony, News Corp reports.

“The Annual General Meeting of Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras does not believe that a Prime Minister who denies us equality should be welcome as an official guest at our parade,” the motion said.

“We ask the Board to act in accordance with this position and issue a public statement as it applies to the current Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and the 2017 Mardi Gras parade and does not invite him as an official guest to the parade.”

Earlier this year a Mardi Gras board member was censured for demanding the prime minister be taken off the invitation list.
