Make secret union report public: Lazarus

An independent senator is pushing for the public release of a redacted version of a secret volume of the trade union royal commission's final report.

The federal government has decided to allow crossbench senators to see the confidential volume to help them deliberate on draft laws to crack down on union corruption, but Glenn Lazarus wants it to go a step further.

"I think what's really important is that we get a redacted version ... out into the public so the people of Australia can actually see what's going on and get an understanding of what we're actually dealing with," he told ABC radio on Tuesday.

The Greens also want access to the secret volume, saying it should be available to all MPs.

"The commission has already been politicised enough. It shouldn't now be used by the Liberals and Nationals as a political plaything to try and woo the crossbench," Senator Janet Rice said in a statement.

Labor already has called on the government to provide the volume to both sides of parliament and potentially other interested parties.
