Optus has fixed a major network outage which stopped many frustrated customers making calls on mobile phones for half the business day.

The telecom giant reported the issue at 8.30am AEST, before announcing it was finally resolved just after 12.40pm.

Several hours after the outage began, Optus said its tech teams had identified the fault and it was working to fix outgoing voice services for an unspecified number of impacted customers.

"We sincerely apologise to customers for any inconvenience and thank them for their patience while affected services were restored," Optus said, following the near five-hour disruption to its service.

The Optus Twitter account was hit with a blitz of complaints from confused and angry customers this morning.

"I am not able to make any calls, error message saying the phone number I am calling is disconnected," an Optus customer wrote in a tweet reflecting the wider problem.
