Hawks, Magpies in beautiful post-game tribute to Crows coach Phil Walsh

A post-match tribute from the Hawthorn Hawks and Collingwood Magpies to allegedly murdered Adelaide Crows coach Phil Walsh has shown how deeply the AFL community has been shaken by the tragedy.

All players from both sides came together on the field after the match and stood linked in a circle for a moment's silent tribute which was joined by the crowd at the MCG last night.

The unofficial sign of respect and mourning followed a video tribute to Walsh and a minute's silence before the game.

The Crows coach's shocking death in his Adelaide home yesterday has cast a pall over the sporting world with football codes across Australia determined to honour Walsh's life.

No AFL club playing this weekend will enter the ground through banners or with theme songs blaring, while victorious sides will not celebrate with their theme songs as a mark of respect.

The South Sydney-Penrith NRL game also began last night in Sydney with a moment of silence.

The Hawks-Magpies tribute was lauded online as a mark of respect, with AFL identities including Melbourne Demons captain Nathan Jones.

"An amazing and touching tribute ... RESPECT!" he wrote on Twitter.

The AFL has promised its full support to affected players, staff and officials and to Walsh's grieving family.

Walsh's son Cy, 26, has been charged with allegedly stabbing the coach to death following an argument early yesterday morning.
