Australian comic Magda Szubanski has claimed a bizarre photo featuring Queensland MP George Christensen is "bar none, the gayest image I've ever seen."

In the photograph, which appeared on the cover of Thursday's Sydney Morning Herald promoting a profile piece set to appear in Saturday's edition of Good Weekend, Mr Christensen can be seen wearing a navy blue singlet, holding a whip and proudly displaying a tattoo of the Virgin Mary holding Jesus on his right bicep.

The openly gay LGBT actress and author shared her unfiltered thoughts about the photograph on Twitter.

"Mixed messages much?" Szubanski wrote.

"This is, bar none, the gayest image I've ever seen. Totes could pass for one of my lezzo mates," she added, with the rainbow emoji ending her Tweet.

Fifteen minutes later, Szubanski followed-up her original Tweet with even more scathing commentary and an offer to play the Trump-supporting Liberal National Party politician.

"I know what my next film role is," Szubanski wrote.

"I will play George Christensen in bio-pic of his life as a closet S&M lesbian," adding the emoji for clapping in addition to the rainbow emoji.

Mr Christensen responded to Szubanski's Twitter quips by adding he "would pay good money to see that movie."

"It's interesting that so many Lefty Twitter warriors are saying my [Sydney Morning Herald] photo is "gay" like it's some sort of insult. Homophobic much?" Mr Christensen also Tweeted.

Mr Christensen came under fire earlier this year after linking support for the Safe Schools program to being a "paedophilia advocate".

He has also consistently opposed legalising same-sex marriage.
