Adelaide convenience store worker confronts machete-wielding teen during rampage

An Adelaide convenience store worker has spoken of how he confronted a masked, machete-wielding teenager in the midst of a rampage inside his shop this morning. 

The 17-year-old boy allegedly stormed the store on the corner of Hindley Street and Morphett Street in the CBD about 2am, and demanded cash from the owner. 

The worker, who did not wish to be identified today, told 9NEWS the boy fled after he produced a weapon of his own - the handle of a pickaxe.

"[It] was a very big [machete], he was extending it to me, threatening me," the owner said.

"Once he saw the stake, he just ran away."

The boy allegedly then sprinted down Hindley Street, waving the machete above his head. 

A 30-year-old man was allegedly slashed with the weapon, and was later treated for cuts to his ear and arm.

Hindley Street traders say the timing of the attack could not be worse, coming right when they've begun to make headway in improving the strip's reputation.

"It's disturbing really, just 17 years old, running around trying to rob a conveniece store and then attacking someone with a machete," one shop owner told 9NEWS today.

Police arrested the teenager after a short foot chase, and he has since been charged with attempted aggravated robbery and aggravated assault causing harm.

He was refused bail to appear in a youth court.
