A new section of the WestConnex Tunnel could open as early as this weekend, but there will be no toll-free period.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian made the announcement at the M8 this morning with Transport Minister Andrews Constance and Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack.

"What did you call it? A toll mania?" Ms Berejiklian asked today, before Mr Constance corrected her, calling it "motorway mania".

The tunnel, which splits off the M5 at King Georges Road and runs nine kilometres underground to St Peters, will cost $6.95 for cars and $20.86 for trucks.

"The premier is right - it's toll mania as Sydney becomes one of the most tolled cities in the world," Shadow Roads Minister John Graham said today.

The tunnel takes just 10 minutes end-to-end, shaving an hour off the journey from Liverpool to south Sydney.
